About Us

Claire Welburn

My CV shows I’ve worked in lots of cultural organisations across the country including the National Theatre, Sage Gateshead and the Bristol Old Vic – and I have, however I am not one who likes to be on the stage as my theatre aspirations have always been in front of house and management. More and more, my roles involved fundraising because without money – there simply was no show. I have been involved in multi-million pound fundraising campaigns for capital projects – my favourite of these, is probably Pegasus Theatre where we successfully raised £6.3m to rebuild this theatre for young people in East Oxford.

After relocating to the Lake District to raise my family in 2013, I found I could bring my fundraising skills to a local project and alongside Katie, we quickly transformed a field into an amazing children’s playground. We enjoyed working together and have done ever since.

I’ve seen not-for-profit organisations from all angles. I’ve been Chair of a local theatre, Trustee of various groups, and Clerk to the School Governors. I’ve worked on board development projects and have a good understanding of governance and not-for-profit structures.
In my spare time I am busy training as I have a passion for running marathons! In the past 12 months I have completed the Berlin. Boston and Coniston marathons. The training is intense but running really helps me focus and I love the challenge.

We are told its best to love what you do – and I do! I am always excited to embark on a new challenge, I love to meet clients and discuss their project ideas, knowing how I can add value to bring their ideas to life. The process of learning about the organisation, developing a fundraising strategy and writing funding applications is like piecing together a jigsaw and seeing the project coming to life is very rewarding.

Fundraising has always been a big part of my life, it was only natural that it eventually became my chosen career path. As a child I worked with my mother on many community fundraising initiatives and continue to do so. I grew up working in the family pubs – here I learned how to communicate with people from all different backgrounds and was endlessly fascinated about their worlds – and at times gave them my fundraising advice! I then spent 10 years working for a haulage company in administration and finance, learning how to read a balance sheet and compile profit and loss accounts and monitor budgets and during this time I studied part time for a BA (hons) Business and Management degree.

In my spare time I’m the Chair Flookburgh and District Recreational Trust and work with my local school. Until recently I was Finance Committee Chair and once my 4-year Governor term ended, I have become Chair of the Friends of Flookburgh School.

I am keen to challenge myself, in 2022 I took part in the Lake District Mighty Hike and completed 26 miles whilst raising £500 for MacMillan. In May 2023 I walked the famous Keswick to Barrow route which is over 40 miles! I plan to attempt this again in 2024 and beat my time!
